{"id":738,"date":"2011-01-02T17:30:04","date_gmt":"2011-01-02T23:30:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tylerfindlay.com\/?p=54"},"modified":"2011-01-02T17:30:04","modified_gmt":"2011-01-02T23:30:04","slug":"making-the-right-resolutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tylerfindlay.com\/index.php\/2011\/01\/02\/making-the-right-resolutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Making the Right Resolutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"internal-source-marker_0.7716912336494179\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tylerfindlay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/calvin-hobbes-new-years-resolutions.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-55\" title=\"calvin-hobbes-new-years-resolutions\" src=\"https:\/\/tylerfindlay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/calvin-hobbes-new-years-resolutions-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a>For everyone who hasn\u2019t been reading the news, apparently our calendar\u2019s have rolled over of 2011. \u00a0For most of us, means we stayed up late on December 31 and we will spend a large part of the next few weeks groaning when we have to change 2010 on forms to 2011. \u00a0The other popular symptom of the New Year is the New Year\u2019s resolution. \u00a0By my own opinion (and since you\u2019re reading my blog, you\u2019re going to get it) is the calendar rolling over is a completely arbitrary event that is part of a calendar designed hundreds of years ago, and has no significant meaning outside the minds of the people who follow it. \u00a0It can also create issues with people who believe in the mysticism of it and set resolutions that are high out of reach. \u00a0This leads to many not following their resolutions past January. \u00a0I believe that when taking something on, you should work hard to set yourself up for success. \u00a0\u00a0The most frequent new years resolution is weight loss. \u00a0An example might be to \u201close 20 pounds by February\u201d. \u00a0Dissecting this goal though, there is a lot wrong with it.<\/p>\n<h2>Not realistic<\/h2>\n<p>The first mistake this goal made was thinking about what happened in the past. \u00a0If it took you 2 months to lose 10 pounds, chances are by setting this goal you\u2019re already setting yourself up for failure.<\/p>\n<h2>Goals are based on results instead of actions<\/h2>\n<p>If the resolutionary (this should TOTALLY be a word) starts going to the gym, that in itself a success; you started doing something that you weren\u2019t doing before. \u00a0However, it will be easy to be disheartened when the change doesn\u2019t achieve the weight loss goal. \u00a0Make sure that the goal you set for yourself is based on your actions, not the results. \u00a0This leads right into &#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>Lacking Strategy<\/h2>\n<p>The first thing I would ask or someone who had this goal is \u201chow are you going to do it?\u201d \u00a0The wrong answer would be \u201cstart going to the gym more.\u201d \u00a0Immediately, you\u2019ve lost the quantifiable part of your goal. \u00a0If they answered \u201cby going to the gym 3 times a week for a half hour run\u201d, I would respond \u201cthen that should be your goal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>As much as New Years might give someone the motivation to go for something, I sometimes worry if gives people unnatural expectations of achieving it. \u00a0In the end, the achievement of your goals is up to you. \u00a0Pope Gregory XIII, the creator of our calendar chose the date, and he won\u2019t be helping you with the goals <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1iAZp5VCAb5lGEeFzajOCrZIaptFY4uiAibu8fcea0gA\/edit\">(http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gregorian_Calendar)<\/a> so if you fall short, don\u2019t be discouraged. \u00a0Renewal comes by our own choice, so if you fall short, don\u2019t be afraid to try again on February 1.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For everyone who hasn\u2019t been reading the news, apparently our calendar\u2019s have rolled over of 2011. \u00a0For most of us, means we stayed up late on December 31 and we will spend a large part of the next few weeks groaning when we have to change 2010 on forms to 2011. \u00a0The other popular symptom [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,13],"tags":[28,39,53,59],"class_list":["post-738","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-coaching","category-quercus","tag-coaching","tag-goal-setting-2","tag-new-years","tag-resolutions"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
